In June 2003, Namibia was included in free trade talks with the United States as part of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). It had ... received $113 million over five years in assistance from the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, and announced that local production of anti-AIDS drugs would soon begin—a measure that was expected to make life-prolonging drugs available and affordable to thousands of infected persons. The HIV/AIDS adult prevalence rate stood at 22%.

Namibia [1] is located in Southern Africa, bordering South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and the Atlantic Ocean. Formerly a colony of Germany, Namibia was administered by South Africa under a League of Nations mandate after WWI, and annexed as a province of South Africa after WWII. The South-West African People's Organization (SWAPO) launched a guerrilla war for independence in 1966, but did not gain independence until 1990.

Namibia is a multiparty, multiracial democracy, with a president who is elected for 5-year term. The constitution establishes a bicameral Parliament and provides for general elections every 5 years and regional elections every 6 years. Members of the 72-seat National Assembly are elected on a party list system on a proportional basis. Members of the 26-seat National Council are elected from within popularly elected Regional Councils. The three branches of government are subject to checks and balances, and provision is made for judicial review. The judicial structure in Namibia largely parallels that of South Africa and comprises a Supreme Court, the High Court, and lower courts.

Namibia is among the three sovereign countries with the lowest population density. The majority of the Namibian population is black African — mostly of the Owambo tribe, which forms about half of the population — and concentrated in the north of the country. There are ... the Herero and Himba tribes who speak the same language. In addition to the Bantu majority, there are large groups of Khoisan (e.g. Nama and Bushmen), who are descendants of the original inhabitants of Southern Africa. Khoisan differ significantly in appearance from both Bantu and White Africans.

Namibia is an adventure, but you don't have to be an adventurer to experience this country. A well-maintained road network makes travelling a pleasure. At the arrival in the cosy capital of Windhoek the visitor can already sense that Namibia is not only Africa. European culture is ... visible. Impressive buildings in the Wilhelmian style bear witness to the German colonial times. Many shops have German owners and you meet German speaking Namibians everywhere.
