Rey Mysterio, Jr., a soft-spoken, compact professional wrestler of Mexican descent, is holding his own in a field dominated by loud-mouthed giants. Born Óscar Gutiérrez in San Diego, California, the high-flying 5-foot-6 grappler is one of World Wrestling Entertainment’s biggest stars – but rather than impressing fans and haters alike with his size and strength, Mysterio wows them with his speed and finesse. Along with the late Eddie Guerrero, Gutiérrez has quieted those who held that smaller wrestlers with a lucha libre background would never succeed in American wrestling.

At WrestleMania 22 in Chicago, Mysterio became the World Heavyweight Champion by pinning Randy Orton in a Triple Threat Match, following a 619 and a West Coast Pop. San Diego based rock band P.O.D. performed Rey's theme, "Booyaka 619", live at WrestleMania. This victory was historic on many levels, as Mysterio became the shortest (5'3") and lightest (165 lb) world champion in WWE history. He is the third masked wrestler (after Kane and Mankind) and third Hispanic wrestler (after Pedro Morales and Eddie Guerrero) to win a WWE world title. Following this victory, Mysterio was congratulated on the entrance ramp by Chavo Guerrero and Vickie Guerrero, and backstage by his good friend Chris Benoit.
mysteriooutcrop.jpg Rey Misterio Jr. (changed to Mysterio when he entered the WWE) spent much of his early career in the AAA promotion in Mexico. He garnered some attention by North American promoters when he appeared in their When Worlds Collide PPV. In 1995, he wrestled briefly in ECW. His matches against Psicosis and Juventud Guerrera brought the house down. He was signed by WCW in 1996.
Rey Mysterio isn't just a supporter of Teen Read Week, he ... has been involved with WWE's ongoing literacy campaign called Get R.E.A.L. Read. The campaign promotes reading and the core values respect, education, achievement and leadership through Superstar visits to schools and libraries.
