Now Myskina is just a few fantastic weeks away from No. 1. With No. 1 Davenport flu-ridden sick and out of Zurich and No. 2 Amelie Mauresmo hobbled but playing again, Myskina has a tremendous opportunity to seize the top spot. If she does so, she won’t be a flag-less No. 1 like Davenport and Mauresmo are. With her Roland Garros title, she could end the year as a very legitimate queen of her sport. Defending her crown in Moscow will ease the seemingly unending pain that Myskina felt after gagging a 5-1 in the third set lead over Justine Henin-Hardenne in Athens.

Myskina was the highest of five women's seeds to depart yesterday. The most humiliated of those was Italy's Francesca Shiavone, who was thrashed by one of the most exciting emerging talents, Tatiana Golovin. At 16, she is the youngest player in the draw and is already 54 in the world, partly through finishing runner-up to Sharapova at Edgbaston recently.

Myskina, the first Russian woman to win this event, defeated Amelie Mauresmo of France 6-2, 6-4. Former President Boris Yeltsin was in the stands and was one of the first to congratulate her.

Myskina held every service game against Ivanovic, benefiting from her young opponent's 37 unforced errors. Following the victory, the Moscow native received courtside congratulations from a beaming Boris Yeltsin and autographed a straw hat for the former Russian president.

Myskina was the fourth Russian to reach the Kremlin finals but the only one to win. The others were Yelena Makarova in 1995, Anna Kournikova in 2000 and yelena Dementieva in 2001.

Myskina added the doubles crown to her collection too. She teamed up with countrywomen Elena Likhovtseva to make short of Neha and Shikha Uberoi 6-1, 6-0. Despite being outclassed in the final, it was a creditable performance in the tournament by the Uberoi sisters.
