Myskina, the top seed this week, prevailed against a player that has been troublesome in the past, beating unseeded Slovak Martina Sucha, 64 64. They were 2-2 lifetime prior to Friday's encounter, with Sucha winning their most prominent previous encounter, in the first round of Roland Garros five years ago. But this time the Russian was too tough, overcoming holes of 4-1 in the first set and 3-1 in the second en route to victory.

Peschke won the first two of their previous three meetings, but Myskina has become a different player since they last played at Leipzig in 2002. Confident after winning her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros last year, the third-seeded Russian needed just 58 minutes to wrap up the match.

One should be realistic, Myskina explained after the crushing loss, specifying that she was well aware that she went to Roland Garros not for victory but to check the extent of fitness. 2004 Roland Garros winner, Myskina said she had trained for a month before the tournament but her left foot was aching.
