Myskina appeared relaxed as she settled into the match. But Dementieva struggled with awkward footwork - a sign of nerves - and was often out of position on shots. Twice she hit swinging volleys into the net.

After leading 3-1, Myskina conceded her next three service games. But although the match became competitive, Peschke was unable to hold her own serve, and with breaks in the last six games Myskina was able to hold on for victory.

After the match, The Florida Times-Union and Water's Edge magazine presented Myskina with a "Commitment to Community" award for her efforts to help the victims of the Beslan school tragedy in her home country. Myskina donated clothing, toys and money to the Red Cross and spent time with several families at a hospital in Moscow.
