Myskina proceeded to dominate the final games of the match with some powerful stroke play. The 85th ranked Russian was to loose only one further game in the match, she even managed to avert the need to serve out the match by breaking Kournikova at 3-5 to secure a memorable victory.

Soon after the match ended, a dejected Myskina shrugged her shoulders about the slice on her little finger. It hadn't affected her play she said, all mellow. It was simply her own poor performance that led to qualifier Peng advancing to the quarter-finals. It was ... the light swirling wind and heat on centre court that the Russian found trying.
