Last year on this court, Myskina became the first Russian woman to win a Grand Slam singles title by defeating her compatriot Elena Dementieva. This time, she was seeded No. 5 but sustained a loss that could drop her out of the top 10.

Migraine: ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’ [I]t was a much grander occasion than that as Myskina became the first Russian woman to win a Grand Slam title. Unfortunately, the first all-Russian final in a Grand Slam event and Dementieva's shaky second serve did not come close to living up to the occasion, which explains, in part but only in part, why Myskina kept her exultation to the bare minimum.
Saturday's semifinal will mark the fourth meeting between Myskina and Arvidsson, the first three all seeming to come during career breakthroughs for the Swede. In 2004, she played her first Grand Slam main draw, only to fall to Myskina in the first round, 62 75; upon reaching her first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour quarterfinal at this event in 2005, she again fell to the Russian, 75 62; and earlier this year, she reached her first third round of a major, only to fall, 63 61, to Myskina. Arvidsson is still seeking her first victory over a Top 15 player.

Russian tennis player Anastasia Myskina The Fed Cup win ended a brilliant season for Russian women's tennis – three Grand Slam champions in Myskina, Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon. Other Russian achievements this year included Sharapova taking the year-end WTA Championships, four players in the Top 10, seven in the Top 20, and, now, the Fed Cup trophy.
