Before she had a breakthrough to win the French Open last year, her perfectionist streak and occasionally volcanic on- court persona kept her from compiling results that were worthy of her silken groundstrokes. She punched through that with the help of her even-tempered coach, Jens Gerlach, only to find a much weightier reason to take her eyes off the ball.

Myskina won the opening game of the match and promptly broke Schiavone in the next to set the tone for a one-sided match. She broke the Italian a second time in the fourth game and held serve to take an impressive 5-0 lead. It was only in the sixth game that Schiavone finally held serve, but that was hardly going to be enough and Myskina served out the set.
