Myrna Loy was a remarkable lady and a wonderful actress, for whom many very nice Web sites have been created. Many of them are listed in Part II of this article, which has been updated as a celebration of the centennial of her birth.
William Powell and Myrna Loy appeared in 14 films together, demonstrating the kind of filmic chemistry that may be impossible to duplicate. The best of these were the Thin Man films, which Warner Home Video released in a superb DVD box set in 2005; the first Thin Man (1934) in particular is a superb example of Hollywood craftsmanship by director W.S. Van Dyke.

The director W. S. Van Dyke chose Loy after he realized that she possessed a wit and sense of humor that had not been displayed in her previous films. At a Hollywood party, he pushed her into a swimming pool to test her reaction, and felt that her aplomb in handling the situation was exactly what he envisioned for Nora. Louis B. Mayer at first refused to allow Loy to play the part, saying that she was a dramatic actress only, but Van Dyke insisted. Mayer relented on the condition that filming be completed within three weeks as Loy was committed to start filming Stamboul Quest (1934). The Thin Man became one of the year's biggest hits, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.
