Mya: Songs
built 135 days ago
Her father performed in R&B bands, her mother was an accountant, as Mya grew up in suburban Maryland the oldest of three children and the only girl. Her strict upbringing emphasized the value of school and working hard to get good grades. But when her father finally heard her sing, he had her record a couple of demo tapes and took them to a club where he was playing. There he met Haqq Islam, President and CEO of University Music. Islam listened to the tapes and agreed to come to Mya's home, where she sang him two En Vogue songs.

Today Mya N is either performing as a Solist or in Quartet. Her music is sensuous, lyrical but ... with soul and rock elements. Her songs are reflecting her life and move deeply.

Her self-titled debut, released in April of 1998, included songs by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Diane Warren, and Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot, as well as four compositions coauthored by Mya herself. The first single from Mya, "It's All About Me," went into the pop top 40 in July 1998 and earned a gold record for selling over one million copies. That summer Mya ... appeared on the single "Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)" with Pras Michel of the Fugees and Ol' Dirty Bastard. Included on the soundtrack to the film Bullworth, the song earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. At the end of the year Mya appeared on another high-profile track, "Take Me There," with BLACKstreet and Mase. The song appeared on the Rugrats soundtrack and was used in a Burger King commercial.

It's great that Mya wants to sing a song in honor of people, like her mom, who have survived breast cancer. It's even understandable that the song is a gloppy, Kara DioGuardi-penned ballad. But calling the song "My Bra"--and sprinkling the lyrics with such metaphors as "When it's just too hard to make it / Through another day / You're lifting me up / My bra my bra my bra"--just seems like a really, really bad idea, especially when one realizes that a lot of bras out there advertise their ability to not only lift, but separate.
