Mumps is an infection of the salivary glands caused by the mumps virus. The most common gland affected is the parotid gland which causes swelling at the angle of the jaw in front of the ear. There has been a marked decline in the number of cases of mumps since the introduction of an effective mumps vaccine.
Mumps is a contagious viral infection that can cause painful swelling of the salivary glands, especially the parotid glands , between the ear and the jaw. About 1 out of 3 people with mumps will not have gland swelling. They may have an upper respiratory tract infection (URI) instead.1
Mumps can be treated internally with a combination of echinacea, clover, chamomile, and peppermint. Externally, fresh chopped ginger applied as a compress can alleviate the pain of the swelling. Gentle massage of the swollen areas with chamomile oil is ... beneficial. Inhaling eucalyptus oil also helps.

Mumps can affect people of all ages, but it most commonly affects children between the ages of 5 and 19. Mumps is rare in babies younger than a year old, because they still have some protection against the virus from their mothers. It is a mild illness in children younger than 2.
Mumps is a caused by a paramyxovirus, which is antigenically related to the parainfluenza viruses. Infection with the virus causes fever, headache and inflammation of the parotid glands. It is mainly a childhood disease, with a peak incidence in the group aged 5-9 years. Mumps was common prior to the introduction of vaccination, and was a relatively common cause of viral meningitis. Nerve deafness is one of the most serious, but rare, complications (1 in 500 hospitalised cases) of the disease. About 30 per cent of people with mumps will have only mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.

Mumps is uncommon in adults because most adults have either had the illness as children or have been immunized with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. When adults do get the illness, symptoms may be more severe, and complications are more likely.
