Windows Live Messenger (WLM), formerly known as MSN Messenger, is a freeware instant messaging client for Microsoft Windows first released on 22 July 1999 by the Microsoft corporation. It is part of Microsoft's Windows Live set of online services. The current version is 8.0, which was released on June 19, 2006. Amongst its users it is still often referred to as "MSN," (referring to pre-8.0 versions) primarily because many people don't understand that the MSN brand is being phased out from this software or possibly because they haven't heard of Windows Live. Some people just call it MSN because it is familiar and easy to say. In some parts of Latin America and Spain it is known as simply "Messenger".

MSN Web Messenger is a browser-based messaging program that allows MSN users to instant-message people on their contact list, from computers that do not or cannot have the program installed (ie public computers). Web Messenger was launched in August 2004, and is convenient for people who are using the internet away from home, or own computers that are some way incompatible with the MSN program. On the contact list for MSN Messenger users, the status of somebody using Web messenger is either displayed as a globe (), or by appending the word (Web) after their name, depending on the version of MSN Messenger used.

The latest release of MSN Messenger, including mobile messaging capability, has been available to MSN users in many markets around the world including; Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom since May 2005. The company ... says that Normal PC-to-PC messaging on MSN Messenger will remain free of charge using MSN Messenger 7.5 Beta. However, there is a small charge every time you send a message during a conversation from MSN Messenger to a mobile phone with this service. The company for now has no plans to extend the service beyond the support for Vodafone users.
