This can pose a problem for users who wish to release their messaging handle but not their email address.

MSN Mobile, the Windows Mobile client of MSN Messenger shouldn't be affected by these changes/update even if most of the current features, MSN Messaging offers cannot be used with MSN Mobile. No VoIP, no contact grouping, no exchange of handwritten messages (while a Pocket PC would be the best device for this) but just plain IM.
