As MSN Chat had now become a Subscription Only (Premium) service, This introduced extra user and channel modes. The channel mode 'S' was added to indicated that only subscribers could talk. The user mode 'B' (to indicate the user was subscribed) & O (to indicate the user was not subscibed) were added. With the exception of Official MSN Staff. It was impossible for a user with the mode "O" to chat in a channel with the mode "B".

MSN is moving their chat services to a subscription-only service. They are not shutting anything down. They needed a PR coup to minimize the backlash of users and the spectre of child exploitation online seemed like a good one.

MSN Chat can be accessed through chat.msn.com. This is now a subscription service that costs $19.95 a year and includes 40MB of online storage and virus protection. MSN states that this subscription plan is used to prevent spam and unwanted advertisements.
