Starting October 14, only MSN chat rooms in New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Canada and Japan will remain free, but moderated. Microsoft has not yet said how much it will charge chatters in the US.

MSN Chat hosts a variety of chat rooms with topics including entertainment, health and medicine, religion, romance, and sports and recreation. You can even create your own chat room to meet your friends in.

Roughly 20 minutes before MSN Chat closed, the Sysops and Guides sent broadcast messages to every room, with brief messages such as Thank you and how they enjoyed working there. Here are some of the broadcast messages they sent prior to closing:

The chat servers belong to MSN and they can do with them what they want. If they feel charging is the way to go, that's up to them. Are they kicking themselves in the butt, certainly. So, instead of closing down their chat rooms, they charge for them. When they don't at least break even, it's an excuse to shut them down permenantly. It's the way most free internet services go.

When you enter a Chat Room for the first time, the MSNBC Chat software will automatically download. If changes to the MSNBC Chat software have been made since you last chatted, the software will download again.
