A Mountain Lion is one of the biggest challenges to photograph because they are extremely elusive. Mountain Lions are the second largest and most widely distributed cat in the Americas. Also referred to as cougars, pumas, or panthers, the Mountain Lion is prevelent on Canadas Vancouver Island. Cougars prey on deer primarily, which makes up 80 to 90 percent of its diet supplemented with other small mammals and elk.

The Mountain Lion is the largest of the wild cats in North America. A male lion can average 130 – 150 pounds and a female 65-90 pounds. Mountain Lions are a tawny to grayish color. They are dark brown at the tip of their long tail. They are ... dark brown on the back of their ears and on the sides of their nose.

The Mountain Lion has the widest distribution of any wild cat, from Canada to South America. Formerly distributed throughout North America, the Mountain Lion is now found mostly in the remote areas of the western U.S., as well as western Canada and much of Mexico. A small population still exists in southern Florida, where the species is considered endangered.

The predatory behavior of a Mountain Lion is very similar to the domestic cat. The lion will attempt to conceal itself for a surprise attack while stalking its prey. A crouched position is assumed with the tail twitching and the ears upright. An agitated lion may snarl and lay its ears back.

In 2004, the Arizona Game and Fish Department held three public workshops to take public input on a draft protocol for responding to human-mountain lion encounters. The workshops were held in Tucson, Flagstaff, and Phoenix, and were attended by 240 people.
