Moulin Rouge: Films

Prior to Moulin Rouge, Luhrmann's most recent feature film was the audacious William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet for Twentieth Century Fox, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. This followed the international success of his film debut, Strictly Ballroom, which grossed more than $80 million at the box office. Strictly Ballroom premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the Prix de la Jeunesse and a special mention for the Camera D'Or before going on to win numerous other international awards, including three BAFTAs and eight AFIs (Australian Film Institute Awards). The feature evolved out of a play that Luhrmann conceived, co-wrote, staged and directed while studying to be an actor at Sydney's National Institute of Drama (NIDA).

Hell, Moulin Rouge may even win best film. Now that would be something else. Let's hope the film is as good as the soundtrack, because this is as good as soundtracks get. A masterpiece of conception and execution with devastating performances and epic emotion. Like Bogey says, "Play it again, Sam." And again. And again.

The Moulin Rouge soundtrack was originally a single CD compilation of songs but, due to popular demand, a second CD was later released. The soundtrack therefore became a double-disc collection of tunes from the film and both CD's are available to buy in a special collector's edition 'box set'.

Moulin Rouge exhibits the visual flair, cultural admixture, and depth of character normally found in a four minute R&B video. But a video remains satisfied with the cool pop surface of things and knows not to drag itself over an hour or two. Moulin Rouge, a wildly fanciful burst of action from the director of William Shakespeare's Rome and Juliet, heeds no such restraints. The film sacrifices all in a rush to entertain.
