"Moulin Rouge" is a celebration of truth, beauty, freedom, but above all things, love - set in the infamous, gaudy and glamorous Paris nightclub, circa 1900. Director Baz Luhrmann brings together gorgeous period design and modern-era pop tunes to create a unique comic/tragic motion picture experience. Nicole Kidman portrays Satine, the Sparkling Diamond, star of the Moulin Rouge and the city's most famous courtesan. Satine is caught between the love of a young writer and another man's obsession. Ewan McGregor is the writer, Christian, who finds himself plunged into this decadent world where anything goes - except for falling in love.
Set in 1900 France, Moulin Rouge is narrated by and focuses on Christian (McGregor), a young, naive, and idealistic writer. Christian comes to Paris to experience the “Bohemian” movement, which emphasizes the film’s motto: freedom, beauty, truth, and love. A strange incident at his apartment leads him to meet the one and only Henri de Toulouse Lautrec (John Leguizamo) and his merry band of actors and writers. They then encourage Christian to ask to work at the Moulin Rouge, the most popular nightclub in the city.

Image Certainly, the Moulin Rouge itself makes a fine location for such an exercise. An infernal playground for the rich, the beautiful, and the desperately creative, it hides every indulgence beneath the blades of its colossal windmill. Here, on the brink of the twentieth century, the exotic courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman) entrances men with her forbidden smile while fresh-faced playwright Christian (Ewan McGregor) and his band of bohemians plot to create the perfect play. Naturally, the two find themselves hopelessly in love, even though Satine has been promised to the cruel Duke (Richard Roxburgh) in exchange for financial support of Christian's play. Luhrmann heaps layer upon visual layer to this rather thin exposition, from the outfits of the can-can dancers to the bewildering special effects and editing tricks. Every image on-screen is packed with information and while it doesn't add up to much, that's not really the point.
In the film, Nicole Kidman plays the Moulin Rouge's most notorious star, forced to choose between a young writer's inspiration and another man's obsession. Ewan McGregor is the writer who finds himself plunged into this decadent world where anything goes - except falling in love. The film ... stars John Leguizamo as Toulouse-Lautrec, Jim Broadbent as Zidler, the Club's owner, and Richard Roxburgh as the Duke. It was written by Baz Luhrmann & Craig Pearce, and the producers are Martin Brown, Baz Luhrmann and Fred Baron.

Moulin ROuge is the best musical of all time and the best film of 2001!! Baz Luhrmann makes beautiful work - he is one of the great directors who puts his heart and soul in a film, until it's perfect! And Moulin Rouge is almost there! Nicole Kidman gives the role of her life as well as Ewan McGregor and Jim Broadbent do too. If Luhrmann ever came near to an Oscar, then it was with Moulin Rouge! Because he won't be able to repeat it again.
