Motorhead: Chiswick Records

A one-off record contract with Chiswick Records had allowed Motorhead to issue a self-titled record in 1977 which had peaked at Number 43 in the UK charts. Earning a reputation in rock circles and a burgeoning fan base to boot the group signed to the Bronze label. An immediate classic 'Overkill' (UK Number 24), the band's first major opus was released March 24th 1979. Cut with producer Jimmy Miller famed for his work with The Rolling Stones ('Exile On Main Street' and 'Goat's Head Soup'), it served up a flurry of long standing live anthems. The title track was Motorhead's first Top 40 hit single.
Inexplicably, Motorhead is dropped by WTG, which goes belly up not long after. Amidst much anger and frustration, the band records "Bastards" on their own. They work out a deal with ZYX for distribution, but this great album does not hit the stores like it should. Nevertheless, it gets more radio play than either "1916" or "March Or Die".

Released June 4th 1983, 'Another Perfect Day' (UK Number 20) marked a major change for Motorhead with the addition of former Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian 'Robbo' Robertson. However 'Robbo's 'colourful' behaviour soon caused consternation in the ranks and the line-up fell apart. A more crafted effort in a more bluesy vein the record featured a superb cover by Joe Petagno (responsible for the artwork for both 'Overkill' and 'Bomber'). It ... featured a host of classic Motorhead tracks.
