The MPAA ... has moved on numerous fronts to fight the illegal camcording in theaters of motion pictures, a major source of the original pirated movie files found online. The MPAA has backed enactment of anti-camcording laws in 18 states and the District of Columbia. The MPAA has created customized versions of its anti-piracy trailers for theaters in 26 countries. The MPAA also has joined with the National Association of Theatre Owners to create a rewards program for theater employees who identify and halt illegal camcording.

In many cases, a motion picture may see only moderate success in the United States but do better abroad. Some motion pictures are produced with the intention of distribution only in international markets, skipping the U.S. theaters entirely. It is important to remember, though, that a moderate domestic release still drives more international box office than no release at all.
Although motion pictures has outperformed the state economy since 1988, employment gains are expected to be relatively modest for the first two decades of the new century. By the year 2020, motion pictures are forecast to employ 11,139 workers, an average annual growth rate (2000-2020) of 0.7 percent. The bright sector in motion pictures is motion pictures production and distribution subsector, forecast to grow at an annual rate of 1.2 percent.

Independently financed motion pictures released in 2003 such as Pieces of April and The Station Agent were brought to distribution companies after being financed by independent sources. The reported budget for Pieces of April was $300,000 and sold to United Artists for $4 million. The Station Agent, with a budget of “mid six figures”, sold all English-speaking territories and Italy to Miramax for $1.5 million.
