Motion Picture Industry: Academy Foundation
built 647 days ago
In January 2002, the Will Rogers Memorial Fund and the Foundation of Motion Picture Pioneers merged to create one of the greatest and most meaningful charities in the history of the motion picture industry. In 1936, the Will Rogers Memorial Hospital was established in honor of the great humanitarian and entertainer – Will Rogers. Since then, the Will Rogers organization has provided financial assistance for healthcare needs to industry members. The merger of the Pioneers and Will Rogers is a perfect match, allowing the new organization to provide assistance to more people then ever under the Pioneers Assistance Fund.
[I]n 1927 The Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences was formed and began an annual awards ceremony. The prize, a figurine of a man grasping a star, was later dubbed Oscar. These awards did much to confer status upon the medium in that they asserted a definable quality of excellence analogous to literature and theater, other media in which awards are given for excellence. The Academy Awards ... offered the bonus of gathering many stars in one place and thus attracted immediate and widespread attention. The star system blossomed: actors were recruited from the stage as well as trained in the Hollywood studios.
