In Australia, Mothers Day first seems to have been celebrated in the Burwood Presbyterian Church in 1920. Details were sought regarding the American tradition and a youth group handed out white flowers to all Mothers at the morning service. The wearing of white flowers then grew as more accepted practice. Subsequently it grew to be a day where children were encouraged to do helpful things for their Mother around the home.

Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mothers Day, was born in Webster, Taylor County, West Virginia, on May1, 1864, the ninth of eleven children born to Ann Marie and Granville Jarvis. The family moved to Grafton, four miles south of Webster, when Anna was a year and a half old. It was here that the future founder of Mothers Day spent her childhood, receiving her early education in public schools. In 1881, she enrolled at the Augusta Female Academy in Staunton, Virginia, now Mary Baldwin College. Upon finishing, Miss Jarvis returned to Grafton where she taught school for seven years.

Mothers Day in Japan is on the second Sunday in May. The holiday was first observed by Christians around 1913. By the 1930’s Mothers Day was celebrated with large gatherings but the holiday was prohibited during the World War II, like many other Western customs. After the war the holiday was revived, as a means of consoling the children and women who lost their fathers and husbands, during the war. Mothers Day holiday was spear all around the country by 1950.
