Mothers Day: Easter Sunday
built 117 days ago
Mothers Day was first celebrated in the United States in the early twentieth century. In 1907 Ana Jarvis began a campaign to establish a national day for mothers. She persuaded her mother's church to celebrate Mother's Day on the anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was celebrated in Philadelphia.

A celebratory Mother's Day cookie cake. Mothering Sunday... called "Mothers' Day" in the United Kingdom and Ireland falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent (exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday). It is believed to have originated from the 16th century Christian practice of visiting one's mother church annually, which meant that most mothers would be reunited with their children on this day. Most historians believe that young apprentices and young women in servitude were released by their masters that weekend in order to visit their families.[1] As a result of secularization, it is now principally used to celebrate and give thanks for mothers, although it is still recognized in the historical sense by some churches, with attention paid to Mary the mother of Jesus as well as the traditional concept 'Mother Church'.
Mothers Day is celebrated in many countries. One of the more interesting versions is from Serbia. On a Sunday early in December, parents tie up their children and refuse to release them until they receive promises to be good. The next Sunday is Mothers Day when the children tie up their mother and only release her when she gives them sweets or other goodies. And on the third Sunday, it is Fathers turn and he is only released when he promises the children some more expensive necessities.

In the 1600's a clerical decree in England broadened the celebration to include real Mothers, earning the name Mothering Day. Mothering Day became an especially compassionate holiday toward the working classes of England. During this Lenten Sunday, servants and trade workers were allowed to travel back to their towns of origin to visit their families. Mothering Day ... provided a one-day reprieve from the fasting and penance of Lent so that families across England could enjoy a sumptuous family feast—Mother was the guest of honor. Mothers were presented with cakes and flowers, as well as a visit from their beloved and distant children.
In recent times Mothering Sunday has in Britain taken on the name and character of the US Mothers' Day. The original meaning of Mothering Sunday in England has been largely lost. Mothers Day in America is in May and does not change months from year to year like Mothering Sunday does in England.
In the UK, the fourth Sunday of Lent is when Mothers Day is celebrated. Back in 17th Century England, strict rules applied at Lent; this was a time when penance was served and treats were with withheld. On the fourth Sunday of Lent, the rules were relaxed and Lent was deemed as over. Poor children who may have been working away in the grand stately homes or learning an apprenticeship were allowed home for Mothering Sunday.
