The Shaolin Tournament for Martial Arts, better known as Mortal Kombat, was, for countless ages, a noble institution that tested the metal of the very best warriors. Years ago the tournament was corrupted by the evil Sorcerer Shang Tsung who dared to take not only the lives of his opponents, but their very souls. Eventually it became known that Shang Tsung was acting at the behest of his diabolical master Shao Kahn, emperor of the Outworld, who planned to claim all the souls on Earth. The Champions of Earth: Liu Kang, Kung Lao, their Ancestors and others have, so far, thwarted this plan.

In the world of Mortal Kombat, based on the popular arcade game, dark forces from Outworld try to infiltrate Earth's realm with the ulimate goal of total conquest and the destruction of humanity. The Mortal Kombat refers to a competition, fought by human mortals against Outworld's minions, which if won, will guarantee Earth's safety for another generation. MK2 picks up almost immediately after the humans return victoriously from competition. Despite their victory... a gateway has somehow opened, and Outworld continues in its quest to conquer Earth. Outworld's warriors include an impressive collection of fighters, including Shao Kahn, Mintoro (a centaur), Sheeva (a four-armed ogre), and Sindel. Earth's mortal warriors, under the leadership of the benevolent God, Lord Rayden, includes Liu Kang, Princess Kitana, Sonya Blade and Jax, who must fight against Outworld's forces.

Before the events of the next Mortal Kombat tournament, Quan Chi had recruited Sub-Zero the Elder to help him retrieve the ancient amulet. Sub Zero proceeded to venture through Earthrealm, defeating the gods of Wind, Earth, Water, and Fire and obtained the amulet. Along the way, he brutally murdered a ninja by the name of Hanzo Hazashi, a man who would later be known as Scorpion. Sub-Zero then delivered the amulet to Quan Chi. Quan Chi later switched this amulet with a fake and presented it to Shinnok, keeping the real one for himself. Raiden then confronted the Lin Kuei ninja and revealed to him his mistake by giving Quan Chi the amulet. Reluctantly, Sub-Zero then proceeded to return to the Netherrealm and retrieve the (fake) amulet from Shinnok.

It's been reported that a possible brief teaser trailer of Mortal Kombat 8 has been leaked on YouTube. Raiden can be seen towards the end and the release date remains November 2008.
