That referendum never took place and Morocco now rules it out, saying autonomy is the most it will offer. After Spain abandoned its colonial rule in 1975, Morocco annexed the territory and fought Polisario in a low-level war for 16 years.

Before Oqba bin Nafi brought Islam to Morocco in 680 AD. the Berber population had seen their fair share of invadors: Romans, Byzantines amd Vandals. But this time things were different. Both the Arab conquerors and their new faith took firmly root in all of North Africa. From Morocco, the Arab conquest continued: fifty years later, the army of Islam, strengthened by new Berber converts was half way in France, having taken hold of almost all of Spain.

Algeria borders Morocco to the east and southeast though the border between the two countries has been closed since 1994. There are ... four Spanish enclaves on the Mediterranean coast: Ceuta, Melilla, Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, Peñón de Alhucemas, and the Chafarinas islands, as well as the disputed islet Perejil. Off the Atlantic coast the Canary Islands belong to Spain, whereas Madeira to the north is Portuguese. To the north, Morocco is bordered by and controls part of the Strait of Gibraltar, giving it power over the waterways in and out of the Mediterranean sea. The Rif mountains occupy the region bordering the Mediterranean from the north-west to the north-east. The Atlas Mountains run down the backbone of the country, from the south west to the north east.

Rabat is the capital city of Morocco. It is one of Morocco's four imperial cities. The history of the city goes back to 2500 years during the time of Phoenician exploration. The city itself was founded by Abd al-Mumin as a camp for his campaign against Spain and later when trying to invade North Africa. Later, the Almohad sultan Abu Yusuf Ya'qub al-Mansur used the city for his campaigns in Spain. He named the city Ribat al-Fath, which meant the Camp of Victory.

The Arabs first swept into Morocco c.685, bringing with them Islam. Christianity was all but extirpated, but the Jewish colonies by and large retained their religion. Many Moroccans served in the Arab forces that invaded Spain in the early 8th cent. Later, Berber-Arab conflict fragmented the region.

Byzantine rule was ended by the Arabs, who invaded Morocco in 682 in the course of their drive to expand the power of Islam. Except for the Jews, the inhabitants of Morocco, both Christian and pagan, soon accepted the religion of their conquerors. Berber troops were used extensively by the Arabs in their conquest of Spain, which began in 711.
