Morelia, about 200 miles northwest of Mexico City, is one of the country's most interesting colonial cities. Its original name (Valladolid) was given to the city in 1541, after the Viceroy's birthplace in Spain. After Mexico's War of Independence, the city was renamed to honor one of its greatest heroes: Jose Maria Morelos. Morelia, a colonial city with an aristocratic atmosphere, is filled with elegant Spanish Colonial architecture; pink stone and baroque styles are everywhere. The city is extremely well preserved, and as with many Mexican colonial cities, planning regulations are rigorous and ensure that the genuine colonial look and feel is kept authentic and true. Morelia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a cathedral with twin towers of over 200 feet.

Morelia's Cathedral Morelia, the state capital of Michoacan, has a population of about 500 000 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has over 200 historical buildings, many built of characteristic pink quarrystone. With many lovely plazas, gardens and atriums and a well-earned reputation as a regional cultural center, Morelia is a destination for those who enjoy colonial architecture and local culture.
Originally known as Valladolid when settled in 1541 per instructions of Don Antonio de Mendoza - First Viceroy of New Spain in honor of his birthplace in Spain, Morelia serves as the Capital of the state of Michoacan. Its street layout with parks and squares served as the model grid for many subsequent settlements in Mexico. After Independence from Spain, the city's name was changed to Morelia in honor of Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon, one of the foremost heroes of Mexico's Independence Movement. An Eternal Flame burns in his memory at the Museo Casa Natal de Morelos where he was born in 1765.

Decreases in international passenger traffic at the airports of Guadalajara, Aguascalientes and Morelia were possibly a result of the substitution effect as several of the LCC's have increased the number of frequencies to and from Tijuana. This resulted in numerous passengers choosing to fly to the U.S. via Tijuana due to lower fares, therefore decreasing traffic on flights to and from California. It is worth mentioning that Copa Airlines commenced operations to and from Guadalajara airport in July 2007. This is the first route to Central America from any of the Company's airports.
