Morelia: Mexico City

Hotel De La Soledad Courtyard, Morelia With a consistent colonial-style throughout, Morelia is one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico. It is not really on the well-trodden path of the leisure tourists and so you can walk around in comfort without fear of the bermuda shorts crowds. Morelia is the capital of the state of Michoacan in Mexico and it is a registered UNESCO World Heritage site. There are at least two "information" booths in the area of the square. They are staffed with multilingual students who are very helpful

Morelia's city market is 5 blocks south of San Francisco in a plain, warehouselike structure. It's much like other Mexican city markets, and a good place to observe details of local life. If you want to skip the market, take the street that lines up with the front door of San Francisco, and turn left at the second intersection on Calle Morelos Sur. One block down on your left is the Casa Museo de Morelos .

The Villa MontaƱa, nested in the Vista Bella residential area south of the city, is Morelia's only resort property. Comfortable for an extended stay (service seems to improve after the staff gets a good look at you), but not recommended for just a night or two. Inclusion in Hideaways and Best Little Hotels in Mexico changed its attitude. Prices range from $90 to $180 per night, exclusive of a 10% service charge. Apdo. Postal 233, Col. Vista Bella, 58090.

Casa de Artesanias - Morelia Morelia is accessible by a modern toll road, and is located equidistant from Guadalajara and Mexico City. There are plenty of newer Pemex stations along the way, with restrooms and food. Be prepared with change/pesos to pay tolls. It is a very scenic trip, to say the least.

The beautiful, rustic, old, colonial city of Morelia is situated about halfway in between Guadalajara and Mexico City and has a thriving population of around 1,000,000 people. It has everything from historical buildings and monuments to modern-day conveniences, shopping centers, restaurants, movie houses, universities and colleges, etc. What makes Morelia special, though, is its people. Their backgrounds vary from native Indian to French to Spanish and other nationalities. Their greatest asset... is their warmth and friendliness.
Ad Morelia was founded in 1541 as the City of Michoacan. In 1545 the name was changed to Valladolid and in 1580 it was made the capital of Michoacan state. The name was changed again in 1828 to honor the war hero born here (Jose Maria Morelos).
