They, along with Death, Possessed, Obituary and a handful of others were crucial in the development of the death metal genre and its standards. UK music magazine Terrorizer ranked two Morbid Angel albums in its 'Top 40 Greatest Death Metal Albums', with Altars of Madness appearing at #1. Decibel Magazine ... rated guitarist Trey Azagthoth as the #1 "Death Metal Guitarist Ever". Their songs are complex in arrangement, owing to the considerable technical skills of Trey and drummer Pete Sandoval who also played in the grindcore/death metal band Terrorizer.
Morbid Angel continued to gain momentum and eventually attracted the attention of Earache Records, resulting in the band's official debut, Altars Of Madness, released in 1989, to great acclaim among death metal fans. By the release of Blessed Are The Sick, they had toured Europe extensively, establishing a strong following in the process. The album, like its forerunner, produced by Tom Morris, was once again a marked improvement on previous efforts, and strengthened their position within a growing fanbase. Owing to widespread bootlegging and the band's burgeoning popularity, Earache Records released the original recordings of Abominations Of Desolation in 1991. For 1993's Covenant, released through Giant in the USA, Flemming Rasmussen was drafted in to produce, and their rising profile was cemented by a US tour supporting Black Sabbath and Motörhead. 1994 saw the replacement of Brunelle by Erik Rutan (ex-Ripping Corpse).

Although at first lost in the shuffle among countless other nameless, faceless death metal bands, Morbid Angel quickly floated to the top as one of the most talented. By their third album they could only be classified as true thrash metal...once you reach a certain level of talent, you can't be considered death metal anymore! It's part of the rules.
Win The One And Only! Morbid Angel was not deterred by the loss of bassist/vocalist Dave Vincent. Instead they have added Steve Tucker to replace him and have kept going as if nothing happened. Obviously, the change in vocalists is going to be a major change for a band, but this change has caused less of a drastic change as one might expect. The vocals, although a bit deeper, are surprisingly similar to Vincent's on the last few releases. With the release of Covenant and Domination, Morbid Angel established a direction with their music that they have chosen to follow with this release as well.
