The Moors is the ancient name for the indigenous nomadic Berber people in North Africa, who converted to Islam in the 7th century. The name corresponds to the kingdom of the Mauri, Mauretania, which its last king Bocchus II willed to Octavian in 33 BCE, after which it became the Roman province of Mauretania. Mauretania lay in present day Morocco and Western Algeria. The name of Mauri was applied by the Romans to all non-romanized natives of North Africa still ruled by their own chiefs, until the 3rd century AD.

The typical Moors of Morocco are a handsome race, with skin the colour of coffee-and-milk, with black eyes and black silky hair, and the features of Europeans. They wear a full beard, and are characterized by a marked dignity of demeanour. There is a general tendency to obesity, which is much admired by the Moors in their women, young girls being stuffed like chickens, with paste-balls mixed with honey, or with spoonfuls of olive oil and sesame, to give them the necessary corpulence. The Moors are an intellectual people, courteous in manner and not altogether unlettered; but they are cruel, revengeful and bloodthirsty. Among the pirates who infested the Mediterranean none were worse than the Moors.

A Typical 19th century Moor family The Sri Lankan Moors make up 93% of the Muslim population and 7% of the total population of the country (1,404,534 people in 2005). They are predominantly Sunni Muslims of Shafi School. Etymologically, the term "Moor" was first applied by the Portuguese, who labeled all Muslims after their enemies, the Moors, whom they fought in Iberia for centuries. The Moors trace their ancestry to Arab traders who settled in Sri Lanka some time between the eighth and fifteenth centuries. The Arabic language brought by the early mercenaries is no longer spoken by the Moors, though various Arabic words and phrases are still employed in daily usage. Until the recent past, the Moors employed Arwi as their mother tongue, though this is ... extinct as a spoken language.
Originally formed in 1989, The Moors began as "The Other's". The founding members included Ken Cree (lead guitar/vox), Brenda MacDonald (lead vox) and James Burrell (rhythm guitar/vox). This trio gained recognition for their incredibly-blended harmonies and haunting melodies. Later the band added bassist, Beverly Ross and German drummer Tom Katz. Together this band performed to capacity filled venues across Toronto including Sneaky Dee's Uptown, The El Mocambo, The Cabana Room and the Spadina Hotel.

The Moors trial was held during two weeks in April 1966 at Chester Assize Crown Court. Both Brady and Hindley denied some of the murders and tried to blame Smith for them. A police cordon had to hold back crowds from getting at the police cars carrying Brady and Hindley. Jeers rung out when these cars appeared.
