Although Moonlighting was a hit in the Nielsen ratings in its early seasons, the show's ratings began to decline after the season three finale, which infamously had Maddie and David consummate their relationship after three years of romantic tension. Moonlighting is popularly cited as an example of a television show jumping the shark due to its two leads sleeping together, which many felt destroyed the sexual tension that drove the show. The X-Files producer Chris Carter repeatedly cited the show as a cautionary tale, influencing his desire to keep his lead characters' relationship platonic.

"Moonlighting" premiered on ABC on Sunday, March 3, 1985 with the pilot, a full-length movie. It then began airing that week on Tuesday nights at 10/9 EST/CST. The initial season featured 6 episodes, counting the pilot. Then picked up for a regular series in the fall of 1985, "Moonlighting" entered its second season airing on Tuesday evenings at 9/8 EST/CST which was actually its first full season. The show ran for five seasons, with the final show airing May 14, 1989, and counting the short first season, there are a total of 66 episodes of the series. After its intial run on ABC, the show was replayed on several cable channels such as Lifetime and more recently from Jan 2000 - Sept 2002 on Bravo.

The casting of Moonlighting was very good, but the drama that went on behind the camera certainly tainted the show. Cybill Shepherd was pretty and hard headed as Maddie Hayes. Then unknown Bruce Willis was very cocky and smart-mouthed as David Addison Jr.. When the two were put together, the sparks really did fly. Unfortunately it's easy to tell that the actors hated each other in real life and it kind of taints all the snappy banter between the two. Allyce Beasley was ... well cast as Agnes DiPesto, the rhyming secretary for the detective agency.
