Moonlighting, an hour-long episodic series which aired on ABC from 1985 to 1989, signaled the emergence of dramedy as a television genre. Although the series finished its first season in a ratings tie for 20th place, it rose to 9th place in 1986-87 and tied for 12th place the following season, (in which only 14 new episodes were made). The innovative qualities of the program... were marked by its nomination, for the first time in the 50-year history of the Directors Guild of America, for both Best Drama and Best Comedy.

Moonlighting frequently broke the fourth wall, with many episodes including dialogue which made direct references to the scriptwriters, the audience, the network, or the series itself. Variations of this technique had been used previously in television programs such as Burns and Allen and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, although Moonlighting was the first scripted television series to weave self-referential dialogue directly into the show's plot.
Moonlighting activities must not interfere with any required obligations of the residency program, including ACGME Duty Hours, regular clinical hours, and conferences. e. Moonlighting is not permitted while assigned to inpatient ward services including Hematology/Oncology, Night Float, and Bridge Team, the Emergency Department, or any ICU services. Moonlighting is permitted on elective or ambulatory rotations.

When they found Cy, he was screening a print of "In n' Outside", the episode of Moonlighting that had aired two weeks earlier. Once informed of the problem, Cy stopped his screening to lecture David and Maddie on the perils of losing their audience and the fragility of romance. Cy was played by Dennis Dugan, the same actor who had played Walter Bishop in Maddie's marriage storyline — ... Dugan was also the director of the episode, so his acting credit was listed as "Walter Bishop".[7]
[W]ith so many residents eager to earn money moonlighting, educators acknowledge that many housestaff probably work more than a total of 80 hours a week. While training programs track program-related work hours, they typically have a harder time keeping tabs on moonlighting hours, said Herbert S. Waxman, FACP, the College's Senior Vice President for Education.
