The Montreal Expos were the first franchise awarded to a Canadian city by a major league organization originating in the United States. It was considered a huge step for the city of Montreal, the province of Quebec, the nation of Canada, and Major League Baseball. Montreal hosted the World's Fair the previous year and with their own Major League Baseball team the city really put itself on the map. The Expos inspired MLB to add a second Canadian team, the Toronto Blue Jays, in 1977.

Since their not so triumphant debut in the 1969 season, with a 52-110 record, the Montreal Expos haven’t enjoyed much success. The team has yet to win a National League East crown in 35 seasons. The closest they ever came was in the 1994 strike shortened season when they lead the division with an impressive 74-40 record. The strike then came down and the season ended so the Expos couldn’t claim the crown that they almost earned. One of the few bright spots in this franchise’s history came in 1988 when pitcher Pascual Perez pitched a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies at Veterans Stadium. Last season the Expos found themselves playing their home games in two different countries and neither one of them was the United States.
Note: The Washington Nationals, formerly known as the Montreal Expos, have yet to retire any numbers. The Expos had numbers in which they retired, but when the franchise was relocated, the numbers became available for use for active players. The Expos retired three numbers for four players:

The Montreal Expos were almost dissolved after the 2001 season. If it weren't for the objections of the players union, they and the Minnesota Twins would no longer exist. Instead, the Commissioner's office agreed to relocate the Expos. After much delay, and playing a limited number of games in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a decision has been reached. In 2005, the Expos will become The Las Vegas Gamblers. This information comes to The Uncoveror from a high-level insider at Commissioner Bud Selig's office.

The Nationals, formerly the Montreal Expos, were purchased by Major League Baseball in 2002 and run by the league until being sold to a group headed by Tom Lerner for $450 million last July. Profits from that sale were split among all teams.
