Montreal Expos: Olympic Stadium
built 654 days ago
Jarry Park became home to the Montreal Expos in 1969 after MLB awarded Montreal a baseball team in 1968. At first a 25,000 seat stadium was chosen for the team to begin playing in but that idea was dropped after the city declined to spend $7 million on the stadium. A 3,000 seat stadium known as Jarry Park was selected as the location for the team to play at until a new stadium could be built. Montreal’s Mayor Jean Drapeau ensured that the ballpark seating could be increased to 30,000. Opening day came on April 14, 1969 when over 29,000 fans filled Jarry Park. One tier of seating extended from the right field foul pole to home plate and to the left field foul pole and bleacher seating in left field.

"The Expos play their home games in Olympic Stadium located in downtown Montreal. The stadium opened in 1976 and is thought to have cost around $1 billion to complete. Olympic Stadium was not completed on time due to a strike by construction workers. The (556-foot-high) leaning tower used to retract the roof stood half finished until 1987 when the roof was finally completed. It took another 2 years before the roof, made from 60,696 square feet of Kevlar weighing 50 tons, became retractable. Problems with opening and closing the roof led to its permanent closure.

April 6, 2001 - In an era where the only bright spot for Expos fans was Vladdy, another bright spot emerges as hero Tim Raines returns to Montreal for one last hurrah. In Rock's first at-bat back at the Big O he drew a walk off Glendon Rusch. Throughout the whole at-bat every Expo fan at the stadium stood and clapped for Timmy...all 45,183 of them.
