While the architecture may be less original than elsewhere, the small size and layout of this seaside town 13 kilometres from Montpellier prevents one from feeling oppressed by the concrete blocks that prevail. At the centre of the town, the small modern port is surrounded by cafés and games of Pétanque (bowls). From here one can easily reach the beaches to the east of the town that extend towards those of the Petit and Grand Travers. Towards evening, the lights of the fairground draw people towards the big wheel which offers an unequalled view over the surrounding coast and lagoons.

The development of Montpellier over the last 30 years shows all the hallmarks of integrated planning. You will contrast examples of modernist residential planning in the 1960s (La Paillade) and postmodern mixed-use planning in the 1990s (Antigone). You will visit some of the new tourist, educational and industrial developments using the new transport infrastructure (the tramway) and you will assess the success of some of these projects.

The old city of Montpellier was mostly built during the second golden age of the city and several town houses have been preserved (Hôtel Jacques-Coeur, H^ptel de Montcalm, Hôtel de Manse, Hôtel de Varennes, Hôtel Saint-Côme). In the outskirts of the city, the aristocrates and bourgeois built in the XVIIIth centuries manors called folies (follies), such as the castles of Flaugergues, la Mogère, l'Engarrand and la Mosson.

Thanks to its excellent location between Provence, the Camargue, the Cevennes mountains and the Pyrenees, Montpellier offers a wide range of excursion opportunities. The interior is beautiful, with many gorges, creeks and picturesque villages. This is ... the biggest wine growing area of the world with excellent wines to be discovered and tasted. The climate is excellent; summer lasts until the end of October and you can even sit outside in winter to sip a café au lait or a glass of wine in one of the numerous cafés.
