Montgolfier Brothers

The Montgolfier Brothers are Mark Tranmer and Roger Quigley; Tranmer writes and performs much of the duo's music, while Quigley writes the lyrics and provides their vocals. Both artists have released numerous solo projects on their own, and collaborated with other artists, in addition to recording together as the Montgolfier Brothers. Tranmer -- who is based in Manchester, England -- has recorded under name Gnac (taken from a short story by Italian writer Italo Calvino) in 1996, recording singles for the Earworm and Liquefaction labels. Tranmer became familiar with Quigley's work after hearing his contributions to a 1997 label compilation, An Evening in the Company of the Vespertine, for the Paris-based Vespertine Records, on which he ... appeared. He met with Quigley and they soon formed their own musical partnership, taking their moniker from Joseph and Jacques de Montgolfier, the two French brothers who -- on April 4, 1783 -- gave the first public demonstration of a hot-air balloon in their home town.

The Montgolfier Brothers were the pioneers of hot air balloons. They made the first public demonstration of a model hot-air balloon. In 1783 , they flew a balloon invention carrying a sheep, a duck and a cockerel before King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, to demonstrate that it was possible to survive in the sky.
After several more test flights, the Montgolfier Brothers decided it was time to send some passengers aloft. The first balloon passengers were not people - but a duck, a chicken, and a sheep! Then, on November 21st, 1783, a physicist named Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier and an army major named the Marquis Francois d'Arlandes took flight in a Montgolfier balloon. The flight was watched by nearly all of Paris, including King Louis XVI, and Marie Antoinette! After 25 magical minutes of flight, they landed safely outside Paris, and with much celebration.
The Montgolfier Brothers went to Paris to show their discovery to the King. On September 19th of the same year, this time in Versailles, Louis the XVI witnessed the lift-off of the "Reveillon" balloon. A duck was placed in the nacelle, along with a rooster and a sheep! A success: the animals, the first to fly without wings, come back to earth alive.
montgolfier balloon The Montgolfier Brothers were born in Annonay in France, were the Inventors of the first practical balloon. In 1782 the Montgolfier Brothers discovered that hot air from a fire going into a paper or fabric bag made the bag rise. They demonstrated this discovery in 1782, when the balloon they both made rose into the air about 3,000 feet and remained in the air for about 10 minutes, and then settled to the ground more than a mile and a half from where it rose. On September 19, the Montgolfier Brothers put a sheep, duck and a rooster aboard a balloon to determine the altitude on living creatures. The balloon floated for about 8 minutes then landed saftely about 2 miles from were it started from.
[N]othing really got off the ground until the summer of 1783, when the Montgolfier brothers sent a sheep, a duck and a chicken on an eight-minute. June 4, 1783 in History. Event: Montgolfier
