Mr. Shapiro joined Searle, now a unit of Monsanto, in 1979 as Vice President and General Counsel. In 1982, he was named President of the newly formed NutraSweet Group of Searle. When Searle was acquired by Monsanto in 1985, he was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The NutraSweet Company, a subsidiary of Monsanto. In 1990, he was named Executive Vice President, Monsanto Company, and President, The Agricultural Group, an operating unit of Monsanto.

Asparetame... known as nutrasweet and Equal, is produced by Monsanto's subsidiary GD Searlr Pharmaceuticals. Although Monsanto denies the Chemical's toxicity, consumers have complained of headaches, blurred vision, numbness hearing loss, muscle spasms and epileptic type seizures since the 1980's. More recently a 1996 study in the : Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology reported a correlation between the introduction and a noticeable increase in brain cancers

In the burgeoning low-calorie sweetener market, challengers to NutraSweet were putting pressure on Monsanto. Pfizer Inc., a pharmaceutical company, was preparing to market its product, called alitame, which it claimed was far sweeter than NutraSweet and better suited for baking.
