Top 20 Greatest Film Speeches and Monologues: Video store chain Blockbuster Video (in the UK) held a series of polls in late 2003 with its customers to determine the twenty best film speeches/monologues in cinematic history. Although there were some excellent choices in their poll, the results almost completely ignored early films, and entirely disregarded films with speeches made by female characters.

The excerpt from "Monologues" was read Friday night, among various readings at an event sponsored by the literary magazine at John Jay High School in Cross River, a New York City suburb. Among the other readings was a student's original work and the football coach quoting Shakespeare.

Since that first show, the Monologues has been performed at hundreds of colleges and other venues. All proceeds from these performances go to local groups working to stop violence against women—the raison d’être of V-Day—as Ensler so eloquently explained in her introduction to the 2003 edition:

Since Ensler first performed the Monologues in 1997, over 800 productions have been staged in over 30 countries. The productions range in scope from a performance in a tiny Anglican church in Nova Scotia to one in a stadium of 6,000 people in the Philippines, and are variously mounted by student groups, feminist organizations, and celebrity actresses and directors. But wherever they go, publicity seems to follow in their wake.
