ViewSonic is adding two new models to its line of LCD monitors, the 20-inch VX2055wmb/wmh and 22-inch VX2255wmb/wmh. Both include a bezel-mounted 1.3 megapixel Webcam and microphone. The widescreen LCD monitors display 1680x1050 high-definition resolution with 5ms response time, up to 300 cd/m2 brightness and up to a 1000:1 contrast ratio. Video inputs include RGB analog, VGA, and digital through DVI-D. A built-in ergonomic base supplies 3.2-inches of height adjustment, 360-degree swivel and tilt. Two 2-watt stereo speakers are built-in to the rear of the monitor and full Windows Vista compatibility is assured.

Beware of CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors Sure, CRT monitors may save you some cash initially, but they have some serious disadvantages. They tend to be heavier, they take up more desk space, they’re more tiring on your eyes, and they hog more energy than other models. That’s why they appear to be headed for extinction. For years, graphics pros have preferred CRTs for their color fidelity, but LCD models are catching up in this arena.

Discerning desktop PC users who are looking for LCD monitors generally prefer a bigger canvas. Nonetheless, a high quality 15-inch LCD monitor makes an excellent spare monitor, or a decent primary unit if budgetary concerns are your primary motivators. However, the difference in price between a 15-inch and 17-inch LCD monitor is minimal, so you will see a much better visual landscape with a larger LCD monitor. Both 17-inch and 19-inch LCD monitors usually offer 1280 x 1024 resolutions, which enables you to see slightly larger, easier-to-read images on your new flat panel LCD.

The main reason for running multiple monitors is economic. It is extremely expensive to produce LCD panels or cathode ray tubes with very high resolution graphics. For example, the average 30” wide screen LCD monitor costs between $2,000 and $3,000. The resolution for such a monitor is typically 2560x1600 and requires a special video card that supports the DVI-D dual link connector. Now compare that to purchasing two 20” LCD displays that have a resolution of 1600x1200 each and cost between $500 and $600. Those two monitors would provide a total of 3200x1200 of graphic workspace for roughly half the cost of the same 30” screen.

While the economic cost of multiple screens is definitely a bonus over a single larger screen, there are drawbacks to using multiple monitors. Desk space is not as big of an issue as it was when CRTs were in use. LCD panels are very thin and the overall space difference between a single 30” widescreen LCD and two 20” LCDs is much smaller than say a single 24” CRT versus two 17” CRTs. Still, with the limited space on most computer desktops or cubicles, even a few inches of wasted space can make a huge difference.
