The Department of Molecular Biology and Immunology has a wide range of expertise among its faculty in biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, microbiology and immunology. The research facilities of the department are modern and well equipped. Projects are funded by such extramural sources as the American Cancer Association, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Robert A. Welch Foundation. The department has recently received an endowed chair in Biochemistry from the Robert A. Welch Foundation. Funds have ... been obtained from private foundations and industrial firms, as well as from the State of Texas.

Indian researchers, from the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), have identified two genes that are responsible for Tropical Calcific Pancreatitis (TCP). The disease has been spreading in many Indian states and in South Asia. According to the researchers, the disease is caused by mutations in SPINKI and Cathepsin B genes. The identification of these genes can help in developing genetic screening for early detection of the disease and for taking preventive measures. TCP, initially known as Kerala Pancreatitis because of the disease's prevalence in Kerala, has spread to Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The research team conducted the study on 306 patients suffering from TCP and 330 healthy persons.

Molecular Biology emphasizes the study of molecules that make up an organism and the forces operating among these molecules. Increasingly, molecular biologists can ... explore the genetic control of these molecules and thus define the developmental, cellular and subcellular changes that occur during the dynamic processes of life. Virtually every question, whether in biochemistry, cell biology, developmental biology, or some other biological discipline, applies molecular biology, often as the prime approach, in its solution. Biochemical and molecular developments have revolutionized biological research, fueling the explosive growth in the biotechnology industry and rapid increase of molecular medicine.

Patricia Berg, PhD, associate professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, was featured in a Newark Star Ledger article on her study of racial disparities in breast cancer. Dr. Berg ... wrote an opinion article that appeared in the March 8 edition of the Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel. The article was concerned with the fear of reduced funding of traditional disease research for the funding of anti-bioterrorism research.
