Modulation: Frequencies
built 297 days ago
Wideband FM (W-FM) requires a wider bandwidth than amplitude modulation by an equivalent modulating signal, but this ... makes the signal more robust against noise and interference. Frequency modulation is also more robust against simple signal amplitude fading phenomena. As a result, FM was chosen as the modulation standard for high frequency, high fidelity radio transmission: hence the term "FM radio" (although for many years the BBC insisted on calling it "VHF radio", because commercial FM broadcasting uses a well-known part of the VHF band; in certain countries, expressions referencing the more familiar wavelength notion are still used in place of the more abstract modulation technique name).

The modulation generator generates a low-frequency square or triangle wave. Use this to adjust the oscillator frequency and the filter cut-off frequency periodically. The amount of modulation is controlled with the MG knobs. The modulation generator contains the following settings:

This article explains the phenomenon of audio-rate frequency modulation of sound, which was explored and used compositionally by John Chowning of Stanford University around 1970. His discoveries eventually lead to the design and release of the Yamaha DX-7 family of instruments, one of the most successful synthesizers of all time.

This analyzer is a plug in module which mates with the 850 family of modulation monitors. Together they provide an essential, single package for monitoring and testing BTSC performance. Combines Distortion Analyzer, AC Level Voltmeter/Frequency meter, and Ratio Meter in one instrument.

Frequency modulation is defined in terms of a generalized concept known as instantaneous frequency which is directly proportional to the time rate of change of the angle of a sine function, the argument of which is a function of time. When the argument is expressed in radians and the time in seconds, the instantaneous frequency in hertz is the time rate of change of the angle divided by 2 ;.

Frequency modulation occurs in machine vibration spectra, especially in gearboxes where the gear mesh frequency is modulated by the rpm of the gear. It ... occurs in some sound system loudspeakers, where it is called FM distortion, although it is generally at a very low level.
