The boundaries of Modernism have been fixed in ways which exclude as much as they include. For perhaps too long, literary Modernism has been seen as poetry and the novel. The theatre, and the theatrical, have a tenuous, and at times problematic relationship with the canons of Modernism. Looking back over the "great divide" now, it is time to reassess its generic and aesthetic boundaries. This colloquium seeks to ask questions about the narratives and ideologies of Modernism and its historiography. We’re particularly interested in an interrogation the boundaries of Modernism by exploring the interdisciplinary themes of science, philosophy and theatrical Modernism within the context of an examination of the work of the canonical theatre writers Ibsen, Chekhov and Strindberg.

Modernism is a record label established to release quality, forward thinking house music. Expect to find diverse and soulful deep dancefloor tracks with the emphasis on imagination and originality, existing outside of the increasingly stale mainstream dance scene and the record boxes of those 'name' DJs who require a high level of mundanity in their music.

Avant-gardism of any kind was snuffed out by Hitler but various strains of Modernism continued throughout the 1930s. In engineering, industrial design and even products for the home, the authorities actually favoured modernity as a sign of progress. For designers who avoided politics and high-profile public commissions, it was sometimes possible to continue working.

Modernism concepts applied to residential architecture occur most often in exclusive subdivisions and as in-fill construction in older, established, high-end neighborhoods. It can ... be found on suburban homes outside of subdivisions. Modernism in its less high-style application is to be found on homes in suburban locations, usually in lower-end subdivisions, but rarely, or never, as in-fill in older in-town neighborhoods.

Modernism may fittingly be said to have begun with the deists, a group of "free-thinkers" who were active during the early part of the 18th century in England, where they founded the Masonic Lodge. They taught that all religions are equally true since all of them, including Christianity, are merely republications of the original religion of nature. Reason, the deists insisted, and not the Bible is the supreme authority, since it is to human reason that the original religion of nature is most clearly revealed. (2)

In l907, Pope Saint Pius X condemned Modernism, calling it "the synthesis of all heresies", a religion which was essentially naturalistic, without any necessary divine truth. Religious beliefs were the product of evolving human consciousness, dogmas and theology merely symbolic ways of expressing human insights. The Modernists were accused of disbelieving in the ability of the mind to know God and therefore of preoccupying themselves merely with the idea of God as it developed throughout history. Pius X once again directed that the thought of Saint Thomas be the basis of Catholic theology.
