Modern dance drifted into Chicago on a June night in 1895 when the young Isadora Duncan, billed as the “California Faun,” floated about to Mendelssohn's “Spring Song” as part of a vaudeville show at the Masonic Temple Roof Garden. Visibility Was Poor” (1998) at the Arie Crown Theater. In the final moments of this production, two male soloists, one dark skinned, the other light, slowly repeated movement phrases taken from what were once racially distinct dance traditions. The difference between them remained visible but now as a part of one dance, on the same stage.
