Modern (or postmodern) dance in the mid-1980s, no longer interested in traditional techniques, relies on theatrical elements and the use of literary and pictorial devices. Tanztheater Wuppertal, founded by the German dancer-choreographer Pina Bausch (1940–), performs evening-length mixed media works—such as The Seven Deadly Sins—that stem from the tradition of the expressive dance of Kurt Jooss. Other notable postmodern dancers are the Americans Mark Morris, who worked with Twyla Tharp and the ballet dancer Eliot Feld (1943–); and Karole Armitage (1954–), choreographer of the Mollino Room, performed by Mikhail Baryshnikov and the American Ballet Theatre in 1986. Armitage’s work is characterized by stabbing, insectlike motions and savage confrontations; among the pieces composed for her own group is The Watteau Duets, which merges dancing on pointe with torso movements in the style of Merce Cunningham. Much interest has ... attached to Sankai Juku, a group of Japanese dancers trained in modern and classical dance. Their work is based on butoh, a form of dance theater that avoids structured choreography and strives to express primitive emotions by making minimal use of costuming and actual movement.

Modern dance owes more to Martha Graham than to any other single figure. As dancer, choreographer and teacher, she conceived and shaped the major dance form of the 20th century. Martha Graham died in 1991, at almost 97, having towered over American and world dance for seven decades. The Dancer Revealed is the definitive video documentary on her life and work. This insightful program includes interviews with leading figures such as Agnes de Mille, Erick Hawkins, Ron Protas and many others. Among the many extracts shown of her work are Acts of Light, Errand into the Maze, Frontier, Appalachian Spring, American Document, Primitive Mysteries and Night Journey.

This forty-five minute VHS video cassette accompanies the album "Modern Music For Contemporary Dance" and contains examples of the type of exercises which suit this unique style of music. David Hochoy leads several dancers through combinations of movements which strengthen the body and develop agility. These simple movements are repeated many times while Mr. Hochoy explains each position as he dances with his students. Lynn Stanford has created these twenty-two compositions in a style that perfectly matches the many different dance techniques used in this visual demonstration. The rhythms are easy to follow and with melodies which inspire the dancers. They offer an intimate look at the joy of contemporary dance.

Katherine Dunham pioneered the use of folk and ethnic dance as a basis for modern theatrical compositions. She built her distinguished career as both a dancer and choreographer, and on her academic research into the role of dance in African, Caribbean, and African American societies. Dunham pursued her interest in the origins of black dance at the University of Chicago where she earned a Ph.D. in anthropology. In 1935 she received her first grant to study ethnic dance in Jamaica, Martinique, Trinidad, and Haiti. She especially loved Haiti and returned there many times. Participation in the depression-era Federal Theatre Project in Chicago offered Dunham an invaluable opportunity to experiment with her own folk ballets, such as L'Ag'Ya (1938), a dramatized version of a fighting dance from Martinique.
