There are train societies across the countries which are filled with people who are passionate about model trains. The first ever model train society was set up in London, UK in 1910. At this particular society they have several hundred model trains and over 5,000 books about model trains.

When most people think back to fond memories of their childhoods and remember the model train making its way around the Christmas tree, what they're remembering is a Lionel train. Lionel trains were by far the most popular choice in model trains up until the 1950s. Once other companies began sacrificing quality to cheapen the price tag, Lionel lost its hold on the toy train market.

There were so many people who were sad to see the steam trains go. People soon began building and buying model steam trains. Today these are very popular and model train collecting is a hobby that lots of people are very passionate about.
