Modchips: Nintendo Wii
built 130 days ago
In a very short amount of time four modchips were announced for the Nintendo's seventh generation foray, the Wii: The Wiinja (announced on January 26, 2007), the CycloWiz (January 29, 2007), the WiiKey (February 2, 2007) and Wiip. All four are 'very easy' to install (each requiring only 5-6 wires) and each are so far mainly for playing copies of original Wii and GameCube games media, some boasting compatibility with GameCube homebrew. The Wiip is the first open-source mod-chip project for the Wii.

Nintendo has altered the hardware components of new Wii units in an attempt to block the use of currently available modchips that enable users to play copied games. The new units are part of a new shipment of Wiis and contain an altered circuit layout that makes modification much more difficult than with the earlier versions of the console.

The fact that modchips can be made so cheap and so easily will probably cause a flood of modchips to appear in the very near future. And it will be interesting to follow Nintendos reaction to this. The DVD serial port is very easily fixed, but requires Nintendo to make adjustments in the manufacturing of the Wii. And that is something that usualy takes some time to do.

UPDATED MARCH 27: Nintendo has changed the design of its Wii games console to combat modchips, modchip developers in China have charged. Several design changes can be seen on new Wii motherboards, in photographs that appear to support these claims.

Some providers of Wii modification services in Taiwan think Nintendo could adopt BGA (ball grid array) IC packaging to prolong the time needed by hackers to develop new modchips to at least four months. The longer waiting time would likely reduce the willingness of some users to modify the consoles.
