Moby is a well known advocate for a variety of progressive causes, working with MoveOn and PETA, among others. He created MoveOn Voter Fund's "Bush in 30 Seconds" contest along with singer/MoveOn Cultural Director Laura Dawn and MoveOn Executive Director Eli Pariser.

Moby is ... motivated by the environmental impacts of animal husbandry. "The main environmental argument for not eating meat for me personally is deforestation," he says. "The primary cause of deforestation in the third world is to create grazing land for cattle. Then there's the amount of waste that is produced by factory farming -- not just animal waste, but all the antibiotics and pesticides. All the chemicals that go into trying to keep a factory farm from being just a septic mess all get washed into the water supply."

In the late 1990's, Moby wasn't yet an ideology or a brand name or even a pop star. He was just a soft-spoken music geek, and he seemed likely to spend his career enjoying the kind of underground fame that might ordinarily attach to a punk rocker turned electronica producer turned eclecticist.

The American public did not react positively to Moby-Dick when it was first published. Ask students to track the critical reaction to the novel from its original publication to the current day. They will have to find primary sources such as book reviews from various points in the last 150 years. Ask students not only to report on how critical opinions about the novel have changed but ... to suggest why the changes took place.
