The mission of the Mobile Computing and Multimedia Laboratory (MCML) is to perform innovative research in the areas of mobile computer communications and multimedia systems. Members of the lab are investigating wireless and mobility problems such as routing protocols and algorithms, resource and service location protocols, performance evaluations of NFS and TCP, and mechanisms to improve throughput over wireless links. In addition, issues related to (video) data encoding and compression, resource allocation, traffic characterization and shaping, and multimedia teleconferencing are ... being addressed. Finally, a new class of operating system especially suitable for multimedia applications has been designed and developed.

Architecture for Mobile Computing Mobile devices - namely PDAs like Apple Newton, Psion and WindowsCE systems - are mainly characterized by their small size and their usually weak computing power if compared to stationary computer systems. These restrictions (among others, e.g. weak displays etc.) lead to a number of classes of applications, which are especially well suited for being used with PDAs. Among the typical applications used with PDAs in every-day scenarios are "Notepad", "Address Book", "Calendar", "Communication" (by eMail), and "Information Retrieval" (by the means of the WWW). These applications can be found on almost every PDA by default. The data are stored in files with well known file semantic, which is vital for the implementation of Rich File Access and automatic conflict resolution as used by MLDAP. MLDAP is open and useful to any class of application, which is achieved mostly by the consistent view of the file system without regard to the actual location of the different files.

Mobile computing and pervasive computing represent major evolutionary steps in a line of research dating back to the mid-1970s. Figure 1 illustrates this evolution from a systems-centric viewpoint. New problems are encountered as one moves from left to right in this figure. In addition, the solutions of many previously-encountered problems become more complex — as the modulation symbols suggest, this increase in complexity is multiplicative rather than additive. It is much more difficult to design and implement a mobile computing system than a distributed system of comparable robustness and maturity; a pervasive computing system is even more challenging. As Figure 1 indicates, the conceptual framework and algorithmic base of distributed systems provides a solid foundation for mobile and pervasive computing.
