Mirah

Mirah is a twenty seven year old woman from a small city in the south of Iraq called Kut. When the United States occupied Iraq in 2003 she was working on a degree in English at her local university. As young woman from an area where Iraq’s tribes are strong, she says she lived a closed life, spending all her time either at home or in school, unable to stand up to the men in her family when she disagreed with them. In May of 2003, Mirah met an American lawyer named Fern Holland. Holland encouraged the women at Mirah’s university to form a volunteer group to work on women’s rights. Mirah felt inspired by her words and helped start the organization.

Mirah is the youngest of three children and lived in Bala Cynwyd, a suburb of Philadelphia, for most of her childhood. She then moved to Olympia, Washington and attended The Evergreen State College. Mirah is Jewish, and her middle name means "good day" or "holy day" in Hebrew. Mirah released her first album, Storageland EP on Yoyo Recordings in 1997, and joined K records in 1999.

Mirah has a stripped-down indie pop sound. Her vocals are high and childlike and often whispered, her lyrics sometimes boppy charming, sometimes simple and dark, sometimes obscure. Her simplicity is a two-edged sword: often the songs become ripe with possibilities, but other times their deliberate naïveté keeps them from breaking out into the wider world.

Mirah (rhymes with lira) was born in 1974, appeared on Nickelodeon’s Double Dare, attended Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, likes her record label, and makes good pop music with the help of producer Phil Elvrum (the Microphones). Her voice is a little Erin McKeown, a bit Billie Holiday, and a tad Cat Power. She can swing from simple electro-beats (Recommendation) to a sweeping epic (Cold Cold Water). She could do some serious damage if she could get her hands on an orchestra. Listen up, yo.

Mirah made a plan: She generously offered up her songs themselves and asked for the participation of the people around her. In this hot air balloon ride of remixes, Mirah lifts off with old friends and new ones, taking off without quite knowing where the landing might be. With so many music-smart friends at the controls, Joyride: Remixes is an experiment for Mirah in not being the only one in charge. It is an experiment in floating free through the clouds, sharing, giving away and opening presents at the same time.

Share This Place, Mirah's newest work, is again a collaboration with Lori Goldston and Kyle Hanson. A multi-media performance based on the tender and triumphant lives of insects, Share This Place is a song cycle which accompanies 50 minutes of luminous and endearing stop-motion animation created by Seattle animator Britta Johnson. The album will be released by the K record label in August of 2007.
