The Namesake, the latest movie from filmmaker Mira Nair, uses the immigrant experience to explore the meaning of identity. Based on the best-selling novel by Jhumpa Lahiri, the film follows a couple from India and the American family they create.

Having just faced the death of a loved one herself, Nair felt a profound connection with the story of Lahiri’s novel. Nair explains: "I think out of all my films, "The Namesake†is probably the most personal. When I read Jhumpa’s book it was like I had just met a person who completely understood my grief, who knew the cocoon I was in and everything I was experiencing and I told myself that I must buy the rights immediately.â€

Nair assured him that she wasn't worried at all, and she had made the film, based on a bestseller by Jhumpa Lahiri, for the entire family. She had not even made it for expatriate Indians, she asserted, adding that in fact, the film about an immigrant family in Boston and its emotional losses and gains, was made for a "very wide audience" across the globe.
