Mining: Minerals
built 242 days ago
The process of mining is described in Job 28:1-11. Moses speaks of the mineral wealth of Palestine (Deut. 8:9). Job 28:4 is rightly ... rendered in the Revised Version, "He breaketh open a shaft away from where men sojourn; they are forgotten of the foot [that passeth by]; they hang afar from men, they swing to and fro." These words illustrate ancient mining operations.
The mining methods in the recovery of this mineral are practically the same as any strip operation. The overburden is removed in advance of the mining operations. Overburden varies in depth up to 100 feet. The clay seam has an average thickness of from 12-15 feet, although in some localities it is as much as 30 feet thick.
When Rodolfo Villar sold 20,000 acres to Barrick Gold for its Pascua Lama gold mining project, the mineral speculator signed a contract that he thought would pay him $1 million. Instead, the contract gave him only $19, and a fine-print stipulation that if he tried to obtain rights to any other lands in the surrounding area, he would face a $95,000 fine.

Italy and Greece were relatively poor in minerals... they did not contribute a word for this to Eng., but there was extensive mining from an early date in Celtic lands (Cornwall, etc.). The verb meaning "to dig in a mine" is from c.1300.
